This is the science and process of farming, which includes the cultivation of soil for the growing of food crops and the rearing of animals, fish and birds for the production of beef, fish, wool and other products.
Agriculture is very important in our society today because with Agriculture, we can be able to breach some social and economic gulf like poverty. It plays an important role in every society as it helps to create employment thereby, alleviating poverty. It enables people in slum dwelling to keep themselves busy and be able to fend for their basic needs through agriculture.
We live in a world of abject poverty in many areas of the world today, poverty is one of the most urgent items, on the agenda of modern life, there is nothing new about poverty, what is new however, is that we have the resources to get rid of poverty. More than a century and a half ago, people began to be disturbed between the twin problems of population and production. a thoughtful English man named Maltus, wrote a book that set forth some rather frightening conclusions, he predicted that the human family was gradually moving towards global starvation because the world was producing people faster than it was producing food and materials to support them.
Later scientists however, disprove the conclusions of Malthus and reveal that he has vastly under estimated the resources of the world and the resourcefulness of man. Not too many years ago, Dr. Curtly Matter the Harvard Geologist, wrote a book entitled “Nothing to spair” he set forth the basic theme, that famine is wholly unnecessary in a modern world. Today therefore the question on the agenda most read ” why should there be hunger and privation in any land, in any city, at any table”? When man has the resources and the scientific know-how to provide all mankind with the basic necessities of life, even desert can be irrigated and topsoil can be replaced. We have an amazing knowledge of vitamins, nutrition, the chemistry of food.
Let’s all work towards an extensive use of our tilable soil for the purpose of cultivating different types of food crops.
